A cross-curricular STEM kit for 60 pupils to each make their own periscope and discover how it works. Children will investigate the way light behaves as it reflects down the periscope and then into their eye, and identify how each of the materials is used for a particular purpose. Pupils will use a protractor to mark out angles of 45°, cut slots for the mirrors and assemble the card box. They will measure and cut mirrors, attach them to a mountboard support, fit them into the slots and then decorate their periscope.
Created by mechanical engineer Caroline Alliston. Supporting literature includes a lesson plan, PowerPoint, pupil worksheet and 'how to' blog.
